HTML Editing Programs

1st Page Editor

One aspect which really impressed us was that you could insert raw HTML – maybe from another Website, like banner code – and the program would not attempt to 'fix' the code but just insert it between <DIV> tags. Most WYSIWYG editors love to take over and play serious havoc with existing code.

Created projects are saved as IMS files (a native format) and you can export them into HTML for posting on-line. Like all good Web page authoring tools, this one has a built-in FTP client to upload it to your Website. Web Dwarf is a superb Web page authoring and publishing tool.

Splash Web Author
Features: A simple What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) interface which allows you to drag and drop objects onto the page. You control where they go and how they look without having to learn and write complex HTML code. The Splash! Plug in wizard will guide you through many of the complex tasks required to create and publish on the web. Even adding Java or banners to your page is easy with the plug in wizard. Of course Splash! Comes with on-line help but there is also a great tutorial which will guide you through the process of making your first web page.

One of the most challenging things to learn about web publishing is 'uploading'. When you build your site it sits on your hard drive until you're ready to show it off to the world (by uploading it to a computer that will 'host' your website). Splash! provides an easy tool that will upload your site. The highly acclaimed Splash! Image Mapper is included within the Splash! Web Author program. The image mapper allows you to set boundaries within an image and place links in each area.

FTP Programs

The following set of programs are used to publish or "upload" your site to the server once you have created the file on your hard drive.

FreeFTP Version3.0
A multiple file, drag & drop file transfer program. Some of the features include drag & drop file transfers, saves all URL, password, ID information, watch clipboard, command line, file filter, set port, proxy address, protocols: FTP, HTTP, secure HTTP. Now in 3 languages: English, French, Spanish, change screen resolution on fly, view pics and html code, automatically converts file names and more. (1.4Mb)

FTP Commander
Has set of standard functions for file transfers via FTP. The program allows you to delete, rename, copy, delete files and has all the usual features FTP programs come with.(173kb)

SmartFTP
Is an FTP program with the familiar explorer style interface. Supports Drag & Drop, along with multiple connections, background file transfers, a few unix commands, and can resume broken downloads and more. And because it supports recursive operations, you can download, upload and delete entire directories. Other features include: a built-in tool for searching popular FTP archives, the ability to cache remote directories, an Explorer-style favorites list, a global history, support for entering FTP URLs that include the login name and password, passive transfer mode, custom toolbars, and a command line for entering commands directly.
